Do’s and Don’ts of Google My Business Categories

Do’s and Don’ts of Google My Business Categories

Let’s talk about your Google My Business categories and what exactly are your competitors categories? I’m Tricia Clements with MuttButs.com, and I want to talk to you today about your Google My Business account. I know I talk a lot about it, but it’s extremely extremely important especially if you are a business that Services a local geographic location. Your Google My Business listing one of the things that you’re going to set up from the beginning and if you haven’t done this go ahead in and check and see what your categories are. It’s in the information section when you set that up or login to your account. You can select Categories. Now Google lets you add up to 10 categories. However, Google Really likes to see a lot less than that. They want you to have specific categories and not redundant categories. So for instance, if you are a veterinarian, there’s also a category called Veterinary Care. You’re going to want to select one of those and not both of them because Google doesn’t want you to be redundant and they know if you’re looking for a veterinarian you’re looking for Veterinary Care. The other thing is with these categories you don’t get to just select what you think your category name is. There is a list that Google has and you basically have to go down and select what they want you. From their list and you’re going to do that and I’ve got a link. I’m going to put in the bottom here to those all of the categories. You might want to take a look through there and make sure there’s something that you haven’t forgotten not really thought about but it’s something that really does apply to your specific business. Like I said Google likes for you to have fewer or more specific. Categories you can put up to ten. There’s no set number on what the ideal number is. So I like to say your top three to four really focus on them and make sure that they are good categories that really properly describe your business. Remember for your categories don’t be misleading. Google does not like it when you’re misleading and you put something in that really doesn’t describe your business, but maybe you want to try to pull those customers in looking for it. That’s not a good tactic and you will suffer in the rankings for it. What do I mean by this? For Instance, there a lot of veterinarians out there that also maybe have an on-site groomer. Then there are a lot of veterinarians that don’t so if you do not have your veterinarian and you do not have an on-site groomer do not include that as a category. Maybe you see your competitor has it that’s fine if they do have a groomer, but if you don’t do not add that category to try to a get that traffic because Google will find out and They will really significantly hurt you in the rankings and how does Google know all of this? Well there are lots of different ways, you know, Google knows everything but one of the ways is with local guides. So for instance, I’m a local Google guide and I will go put reviews on put images put videos on and then there are these questions that Google says, why don’t you answer some questions about this location you were recently at. They will then ask you relevant questions for instance. If I was at a veterinarian and it says does this place also offer dog grooming and I would say yes or no. Those questions are yes or no questions, or I don’t know. Those are your three choices? So Google will find out. Put categories in that do not represent your business. the other thing you’re going to want to think about is What your competitors are using for keywords, you may notice that. Only the primary keyword shows up in a Google listing so you can only see that from just looking at the listing with the primary category is so there is a way to find out what those other categories are. Now before I tell you how to do that. I want to make sure that you understand you’re not going to go in and copy and paste because again, they do need to be specific and relate to your business specifically the don’t copy and paste you’re really going to use this as a tool to say, okay. So what are they ranking for? Have I forgotten about something? Is there something that I should possibly put into my categories to that I can write for? All right. I’ve got in tutorial that’s going to show you exactly how to do that. Get a start off by going to maps.Google.com and then you want to type in what you’re looking for. Like they were looking for veterinarian. You’re going to have your search results here and you can Right click on one of these. And then click on view page source. What’s going to come up is this list here? You want to type in that first word you were looking for that primary. category which was veterinarian now, you’ll notice it says 2 of 92 the way you’re going to search for that again control +F. Then you type that primary category in it has a lot of the veterinarian listed in this. do you want to just scroll down and just Use the arrow and look the first few. It’s just you can see they’re doing that. It’s got the search information. You want to go down to where it says all of us know and then veterinarian and then you want to go from there. It’s going to be not far after that. You can see here. It’s got one of the names. Listed and then veterinarian that is the primary keyword. Now it doesn’t look like this one is using additional keywords because they would be listed right after that. Let’s keep scrolling and find some more. For instance here. We’ve got one that has veterinarian and animal hospital. So Animal Hospital is a secondary category that they have added. I want to scroll down and find one that has quite a bit more because it looks like a lot of these simply have veterinarian and possibly animal hospital, but let scroll down and find one here that has a bit more. for instance You’ve got one here that shows. veterinarian dogs kennel pet groomer Animal Hospital Pet Care Service all of those are listed as Additional category said that’s when he might want to take into consideration for instance. Kennel, a lot of veterinarians do do boarding. So they would be considered a kennel in that might be one of their their big businesses. If your veterinarian you may want to look at adding that kennel as another category. I’ll see you see they got pet groomer. that’s because Let’s hope that they do grooming as well there so. Again, veterinarian is the number one primary category. But in this they do a dog boarding they do grooming as well. And then you see here. It’s got dogs. I don’t believe is a primary category. You can select in Google. It’s too probably one of their subcategories that we have talked about. So that is how you’re going to Search for the categories. The secondary categories for competitors. So you’ll see here when you’ve got this list. Lots of things come up. If you want to just take the top one. Sometimes it will bring you right to that for one that you are right clicking on and viewing the page Source sometimes when you click that. Then you do the Ctrl +F and search for veterinarian. Sometimes that’s the one that comes right up. However Sometimes we way Google works. You’ve got other ones that come up ahead of that and you can go through a list and look at all of the different competitors. But if you’re interested in specific one, make sure What you’re looking for is right there in front of that primary keywords. If not, then again, you can see this has when I typed in veterinarian is 92 times here. Just scroll down until you find the one that you are looking for. Remember your Google My Business categories are extremely important. So after looking at that tutorial and then taking a look at your competitors keywords. Let me know in the comments below.
