Change Homepage Layout

Change Homepage Layout

Hello, and welcome to the San José State
University Instructional Design Tutorials. Today we will be exploring on
how to change homepage layouts in Canvas, for your Canvas course. To start off, make
sure you are logged into Canvas. We’re currently on our dashboard. Let’s open up
our course page, by clicking here. You should already be on your home page. If
not, on the left hand side navigation bar and click on the item labeled “home”. Now here, on the home page, as of right now, it is defaulted to our course announcements. We’re going to change that. To do so, on
the right-hand side navigation bar, click on the item labeled “Choose Home Page”.
There are a few options here. For now, we will add our own custom home page. Let’s
click on the selection labeled “Front page must be set first”. This brings us to
our “Pages” menu. Here is a list of all the custom pages that we have made for this
course. We can either create a new page by clicking on “+ Page” button, or use a
previously made page. We will be using a previously made page. We’ll be using the
page labeled “Front Page”. Let’s select this page. As you can see, this page is
already populated with content. Let’s return to the pages list by selecting
“view all pages”. Now on the row labeled “Front Page”. We will
click on the three dots on the right side of this row. This opens up a
sub-menu, and here we’ll select the item labeled “Use as Front Page”. Now, if we go back to our homepage by
clicking on the “Home” menu item on the left hand side, the front page has not
yet changed. Let’s click on the right hand side menu item labeled “Choose Home Page”, we can see our designated Front Page by changing the selection here to
“Pages Front Page” and then pressing the “Save” button. And now we can see our
designated front page has been set to the home page. Instead of having a custom page, we can also set the home page to other versions of a front page. Let’s see
what options we have, by selecting “Choose Home Page”. We have four other options: Course Activity Stream, Course
Modules, Assignments List, and Syllabus. Course Activity Stream, if
we select that and press “Save”, we can see that it will show our recent
announcements and activities that have happened, including announcements, assignments, etc. If we choose homepage and select “Course Modules” instead, our
Course Modules page will show everything for the course that is designed to give
the students a time-sensitive display of assignments in pages. This is another way to organize your course. If we select choose homepage again, go to
“Assignments List”, and click “Save”, the Assignments List will show a list of all
the assignments you have created and published for that current course. This
includes assignments, midterms, quizzes, presentations, exams, and discussions. If you choose homepage again, select
“Syllabus”, and click Save, the Syllabus will show the class
syllabus, either in a document or a formatted display, due dates, the calendar, and the class rubric. You can select any of these four as a custom home page or
any of the other four as your home page. So, we’ll select “Pages Front Page” and save that here. There is one more way to customize your home page, and that is by
showing announcements at the top of the home page, as we have here. You can
activate this by going to the “Settings” menu on the left-hand side menu and you
will be on your settings page. Then make sure that the top menu you are on is “Course Details”. If not, click the menu item labeled “Course Details”, then scroll down to the bottom of the
“Settings” page, and click on the item labeled “more options”. This should show a drop-down of more options. Check the box labeled “Show recent announcements on Course home page”. It’s already checked here. You can customize the number of
announcements that will display by using the drop down, as shown here. When you’re done, click on “Update Course Details” to save our changes. We will return to the homepage by
clicking on “Home” on the left hand menu. And you can see we’ve already had announcements appear on our home page. Congratulations! You now know how to
change and modify your course home page, on Canvas. If you have any questions
